After 20 years, the current iteration of the japanese Super GT championship (née JGTC), is coming to an end. Starting in 2014, the technical regulations will be merged with those from the german DTM, so undoubtedly, part of its unique flavour will go away. Just below is the 2014 champion: The ZENT Lexus SC430 driven by Yuji Tachikawa and Kohei Hirate.
With the opportunity for cars to compete in a geographically wider set of races, it’s doubtful that the japanese manufacturers invest in developing “pure” JDM (japanese domestic market) cars as before.
I leave you with a selection of some of my favourites in no particular order. It wasn’t easy to obtain pictures from the early 90’s as digital cameras were still confined to research labs.
Notice the wild shapes, with plenty of edges and creases, the garish colours and even the strange sponsors (for us westerners)…
Super GT, we love you !
